I went on line to purchase as a "collect from store" item and there is a special offer WHICH IS ONLY AVAILABLE TODAY!!
Buy online and you get £25.00 discount which reduces cost to £723.00.
The offer SEEMS to show a £35 discount if you buy anything valued more than £600 but apparently that doesn't apply to DSLRs-they say it's in the small print somewhere although I can't see it.
So-with the Canon cash back it comes to £673!!
And my wife hasn't objected-but that's partly because I haven't told her yet.

Dixons on line are cheaper still £707 without the Canon rebate.

Yes I agree with you. However, because of the potential problem with some 40D's not working with the 1.4TC I thought it best to try it out in store-interesting outcome to that:-
I ordered on line and went into the store. The assistant (very helpful guy) immediately spotted the TC and told me it wouldn't work any way. I then made the mistake of teLling him I had the pins taped -so "no way would he let me try it in case of problems". while we were discussing this impass his mate phoned Canon who told him "let him try it-it wont work any way".
They let me try it-it worked perfectly (quicker focus than my 20D) and I am now the proud owner of a 40D....BRILLIANT

Don't think there is any variation in the 40D's as far as taped converters working - it depends on what AF point you use, the problem is with the centre point which is different from all the rest. If your 40D is AF quicker than a 20D with a taped converter and using the centre point only then you will probably have the only one in the UK that is achieving this.

Right. To be honest I only tried it outside the shop and it AF'd very quickly. I did notice that it seemed to AF outside of the centre spot and that might well be what you refer to. From the various posts I got the impression that some had found it so bad that they just cannot acheive AF.
Maybe (hopefully not) when I try it in the real world I will also struggle with the TC.
I am planning to buy either the 400f4 or 500f4 at some stage which will allow me to leave the 100-400+TC on the 20D which I know works well.

I am sure you will enjoy the 40D David - that and the 500mm f4 would be a killer combo.

Nice one with the £673 David. A great price. Last night I bought one on line from Dixons, The £707 became £712.70 with postage and because I need a Saturday morning delivery ended up at £722.70. Minus the cash back it comes out at £672.70 A massive saving over what you paid David.
However you have picked yours up from the shop, I have just received an email saying it will be dispatched subject to availability:C
The good side of it is that I've got 30p more than you!!
PS I haven't told the missus either.
Cheers Mike.:t:

The 40D works fine with a tc on an f4 lens, it's when you start needing to tape pins on the tc (an f5.6 lens) to get AF than tha 40D seems to behave differently to the 20D/30D.
