a juvenile was seen at swaffham prior fen today (per rba) so they're in the area but when i went to wicken fen last year i saw all of about nothing, so it's just a case of being lucky.

Don't know of any sightings from Wicken Fen so far this year. There has been one one and off at the Nene Washes viewed from Eldernell and sightings today include Swaffham Prior Fen and Farcet Fen (by me). The latter late afternoon heading towards Woodwalton Fen which is worth checking if you are down here - view from North Hide.

cheers, at wicken the birds usually come in only at dusk, usually males. From tower hide i had 3 stunning males flying around the hide in a magnificent pre roost flight display, but they usually hunt away from the reserve in the day and suddenly and fairly silently appear just as the light is falling.

They're hear now, i went today and had four ringtails and one glorious, ghostly grey male at wicken fen today, while standing on the boardwalk. and the best thing was they were flying all around me, really really close! Unfortunately the great grey shrike didnt show but thats not suprising considering the weather!

Your blog is great too.....reminds me of visiting. I missed the GG Shrike too, but the harriers came from nowhere at dusk. Tower Hide is greta but on a weekend it probably gets too crowded. Its only small and can hold just 5-6 people, even then youneed to be looking back to wards the entrance and away from the canal as traditionally this area seems to be the favoured roost zone. I have always found being down on the footpath frustrating because the tall grass in the main obscures what would otherwise be superb views.

Nice read tho!
