Nick, I bought a D40x and the 70-300VR lens earlier on in the year. I am new to the hobby but have been very pleased with the results. No doubt, those with a critical eye could find numerous faults but as I print to A4 standard and aim to please only myself and close friends, I am more than happy. Having said that, the Science department, at the school where I teach, have taken over 30 prints and displayed them. They seem to feel that they are very good although when one looks at the images posted elsewhere on this site, I'm not so sure!
All my images were taken RAW and processed using Nikon Picture Project which came with the camera. I have absolutely no idea how to post a few examples on this thread. If there is anyone who would take the time to give instructions on how to do it, I will try my best.

Simple
When you've finished writing you post scroll down and click ''manage attachments'', then select which pictures you wish to upload by highlighting them from the pop up window, then click upload (make sure they are sized down to 800x800 pixels)
When they have finished loading (sometimes it can take a while!) just click submit as usuall. Hope that makes sense!
Look forward to seeing them myself..

Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately, what's easy for eveyone else never comes simple to me! My images are NEF (Raw) and each are around 9.56mb. Clicking on 'upload' results in something happening but when the 'green bar' is complete, it remains and there is no apparent transfer to the thread. I apologise for my ignorance - Am I supposed to convert the NEF to jpeg and if so, how do I do that through Nikon Picture project?

I am a 2 day old SLR Camera newbie, previous camera is the nokia N73.
Body 40Dx and lens nikkor 18-55mm. My primary subjects are pets and dolls so my current lens are suitable for my purpose and maybe a macro lens somewhere in the near future.
Like I said, I am only a 2 day old SLR user, I am very pleased with my current setup which is a huge improvement from my P&S camera phone. :D

To change from NEF to JPEG Select a picture in Picture Project, edit whatever you want to and then choose export from the menu. You change the file type as you export it.

I have a Nikon D40 with a 18-55 mm lens and am still getting to grips with the best settings etc and a bonus I discovered a few days ago is that it is nearly perfect for Digiscoping.

Convert your image into a Jpeg, and then resize the image.
Heres how, in capture nx:
1) go to edit, click size/resoulotion. when the pop up screen, "click file size" and alter the pixels, in the bottom right you will see a "total file size" for uploading onto the forum keep it less than 770KB.
2) Once step 1 is complete go to "save as" in the "file" drop down menu, click save as, and under "save as type" select Jpeg.
Hope this helps

Many thanks for your advice concerning turning NEF files into Jpegs. I feel like a pupil at school - the only one who can not understand and follow simple instructions. Whether this works, we will see. My first offering was taken with the D40x and 70-300 VR lens. It was a 'snatch shot' - the ducklings soon moved once they saw me. No doubt the purists will see all kinds of technical faults - noise, colour etc. but as I said in my original posting, I photograph for my own pleasure but have found neighbours, friends and those at work interested.

Great photo, Mick.
As a fairly new user myself of the D40 can I ask what exactly you used alongside it for Digiscoping?

I use an Opticron ES80 ED with the HDF zoom for the scope, the rubber eyecup fell off years ago and I fitted a plastic thing I made from a toilet cistern fitting to go with my old camera, just by luck it more or less fits the Nikon. It's very early days yet for me but the potential seems enormous for this combination, the zoom and focus ring on the camera are very free to move so I just put the camera to the scope and let them move to wherever the stop at( that's difficult to describe but if you try it you will see what I mean) switch to manual focus first, the auto doesn't work when it's on the scope for some reason I don't know, then just use the combination as a scope, find your bird, focus on it with the scope focus and take pictures it's much easier and quicker than the old way of going about it all I have to do now is work out which are the best settings for consistent results.

Innovation or what? :-O
Brilliant Mick, I'm still laughing at this. But seriously, thanks a bunch for your detailed reply.

I too recieved the Nikon D40 for Christmas and am just starting to get the hang of it. Its been a while since I used an SLR and I am very rusty, and the new features on the digital can be a little overwhelming. So far the only adjustments I've made are to set it to burst mode, silent beep and no flash. Below is my first attempt, taken today in Worcester, MA using the kit 55-200mm lens. The picture was cropped by about 75%. The D40x has better resolution and burst speed than the D40, important considerations when photographing birds, but I'm quite pleased with the results from the D40 so far.

Lovely photo, Gregory.
I'm still getting to grips with the settings on my D40 and following the advice of fellow BF member Roy C, here's one of a House Sparrow I took recently. View photo EXIF (http://johngarrett.atspace.com/img/House_Sparrow-071227_exif.txt).

Wow! You did this with the 18-55mm lens? Awesome, that's exactly the set up I have right now until my 55-200mmVR comes via Fedex.

Have a go at using it with you scope, I shall carry on experimenting for a while until I can afford a better lens, in the meantime I do get a bit of a kick doing things that aren't supposed to be possible.
