I picked up my new D3 on Monday and took it out for a run yesterday.
It's fantastic.
I've been using the D2x so didn't expect too much improvement but it really surprised me. Very fast AF, fast frame rate ( I was using it in DX mode due to distance ) and it tracks much better than the D2x. Even with the 1.4x tele on it was fast on the 300/2.8 AFS VR.
We've got a few days of cloudy weather here so I may not get it out again until the weekend and I can't wait.

Neil.

ps I took a few frames with the D300 too and am going through the photos now.

Congratulations, Neil on your (2) new cameras! The folks over at DPreview.com are bouncing out of their skins over these two new entries from Nikon. Now all you have to do is figure out how to attach it to your scope.......:)

Jerry,
It won't be long. I'll the 50mm lens and the Swaro DCA adapter on the zoom eyepiece. Neil.

Neil,

I've had a go with the D3 and the 400mm 2.8VR.

I uprated the ISO and it was hand held in the hall @ Olympia, there is image degrading but the sharpness from this camera and lens is very good. For a test I think I could have refined the settings but that would need getting use to the camera.

It was shot using the hall lights, 100% @ 300dpi. No correcting at all.

I think we would all look forward to seeing more results from the D3.

Yeah, we get a few cloudy days here (Scotland) too and short daylight hours too so I may not get out again till April ;-)

Commiserations on your misfortune but good shooting with the camera ! Mike.

I'm amazed at the cropping ability of the D3. This image was taken at about 80 metres with the Nikon 1.4x tele on the 300/2.8 AFS VR ( I have VR switched off ) and I have cropped the spoonbill in the second photo and run it through Noiseware although there is still a little noise in the shadows.
