I just got my ID Mk III back from Canon this afternoon following the warranty repair which they are carrying out on most of these in order to correct the focusing problems. I have not had the chance to test it yet, but I was pleased with the turn around time as they only collected it on Wednesday.
The point of this post is that I see from Rob Galbraith's site that Canon USA are offering an extended warranty on the ID Mk III's, to run for a full year from the date of the repair. Canon UK do not seem to be offering a similar warranty extension, and I reckon, given all of the circumstances and hassle, it is the least they could do.
I have emailed them today to request that they extend the warranty on my camera for a further year. There must be lots more 1D Mk III owners out there in a similar position, and I believe this is something we should all push for.
