anyone a member of these societies? Which one do you prefer & why?

There is an overlap between both memberships. I belong to just the WFS because I'm only a dabbler in botany. The BSBI seems a bit too academic for my tastes.
The WFS is more of a "flower spotters" club. The main activity is keeping a "diary" which is really just a year list. You can submit your diary to your branch secretary who will comment (kindly) on your identifications etc.
I kept a diary for two years and it proved a valuable means of focusing - giving botanical outings a purpose. It is very educational.
Both societies have field meetings but I think the WFS ones are less specialised.
