I finally took the plunge. I purchased a Canon 400mm f5.6L for my rebel XTI. I've been shooting with a Quantaray 70-300mm el-cheapo lens for over a year now, and while i've gotten some good shots with it, I can't wait to use the Canon 400mm!
Hopefully shooting with the Quantaray has made my technique great!

You'll enjoy your new lens when it arrives, it is a great bit of glass... have fun with it, and post some of the results in the gallery.

I think you'll be very pleased with the results. It's the best piece of glass that I own!

Its a great piece of glass Paul - enjoy. One thing to remember if handholding is to keep the shutter at 1/500 or better.

Ha! Not really a plunge. More like a 'step on rock hard ice'....you'll be very pleased. My problem is what lens to get in order to improve without taking a 'big plunge' for the 500mm....

You won't be disappointed, this is a quality piece of glass and will deliver excellent quality. Many people complain about the lack of IS but I don't really find that a problem as I'm either using a tripod or a beanbag, or I'm taking flight shots. F5.6 is a little limiting but then think how much money you're saving.

Wow, you all are correct. This lens is great! Incredible fast auto-focus, easy to use handheld(at least I think so), picks up great detail. This lens is gonna be really fun.

Is the water ok Paul lol!, I think I might be joining you and take the plunge also in the new year. This would be nice bonus to add to my already 70-300 IS USM lens and newly bought second hand 30D.

Glad you like it you have convinced me.

Cheers.
