Vectis Birder

I bought a 4GB San Disk card for my D80 this morning. There appears to be nothing wrong with the card, it's fine in the camera, but neither of my computers sees it when it is plugged directly into the card slot. I have tried it with an external card reader but the computers still don't see it.
However, when I plug the camera, containing the card, directly into the computer everything is fine. No problem whatsoever.
Anyone know why this should be the case? Other cards I have (I have various ones, 1GB and 2Gb in size) are fine when removed from the camera and plugged directly into the computer's card reader. Is it the size of the card?
Ok, it's not a major problem as the camera plugs into the computer and everything's fine, but I prefer not to plug the camera in as it drains the battery quickly. It's more annoying than anything else.
