I have finally decided to splash out on a 500mm f4 thus rendering my trusty old Cullman backpack U/S. The question is what to replace it with? As i am taking my gear to Poland later this year i need to be able to either take the lens etc onboard as hand luggage with its size restrictions or put it in the hold!!! If i have to go down this route i have been looking at the Peli cases but to take all my gear the weight of the case (peli 1610 case weighs 10kg) leaves next to nothing for the rest of the equip let alone clothes not withstanding the £240 price tag, preferably i would like to take the majority of the gear in Hand luggage but are any of the large (lowepro, tamrac, Kata etc) large enough to take a 500mm + body yet small enough to get thro the restrictions?

I don't know about hand luggage restrictions, but I carry my 500 f4 (attached to the camera) in a Tamrac Expedition 8. It fits in very nicely and has room for all my other clutter, very comfortable too. Here's my quick review - http://www.birdforum.net/reviews/showproduct.php/product/243/limit/recent

Thanks for the link, looks like it could be the solution, just found the measurements on the DTI web site (56cm x 45cm x 25cm) this bag is inside just and Warehouse has it on Special offer!!

Miss read the sizes this bag would be to big for the cage test (33x34x56cm) looks like the Kata HB205 is the best fit and according to Andy Rouses review will hold a 500mm + extras.
Postcard can i ask what Tripod /head setup you use as i am going to have to change that as well

I'm using Gitzo 1349 legs with a Jobu Black Widow gimbal head http://www.jobu-design.com/gimbals.html I made the change from Manfrotto to Gitzo last year and was amazed at the difference.
I see that you're in Suffolk, I'm in Norfolk (near Swaffham) and would be happy to meet up if you wanted to try my set up.

Thanks for the offer, hopefully i'm off to Warehouse Express on Sat to try a few bits out up there if i don't walk out with an armfull of stuff i may well take you up on it.
Been on Jobo website they currently don't have any dealers in the UK so would have to ship direct from Canada.
I see on the Photo forum you are asking about the sigma 150 macro, i have this lens so if you are interested could meet so you can try it out - PM if interested:t:

If you do go to the warehouse showroom to try stuff make sure you call ahead and let them know what you want to test. It's not a very big shop so they have very limited stock, but they seem happy enough to send stuff over from the warehouse. If you call ahead it will save you waiting around.
I noticed that problem with Jobu, I have spoken to the guys there a few times and they seem more than happy to supply direct. I've very happy with my head, it's a shame no one over here is stocking them... perhaps I should suggest it to my boss.
Thanks for the offer of testing the lens, currently I'm trying to resist it. I have just freed up some cash and was planning on getting the Canon 70-200 f4, but have been distracted by the thought of a bigger macro. If I decide against the Canon lens I may well PM you.
