The Katz eye screen works just fine with auto focussing lenses because it is independent of the autofocussing mechanism. The screens will work great with an f2.8 manual focus lens. The microprism optics on the screen work OK down to f4 and barely at f5.6. I tried a Katz eye screen on my D200 and 500 f4 lens. My results were marginal. I described them here: http://birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=92663

I personally did not like the screen on my slower modern zoom lenses. Although the auto focus worked just fine, I was bothered by the big black spot in the center of my view finder. For that reason, I returned the screen for a plain screen.

BTW. The Katz eye people are very reasonable. I actually now have a plain Katz screen with their "optibrite" treatment. It is better than my original Nikon screen for two reasons. First it is slightly brighter. Second, and much more important, my original Nikon screen was not properly adjusted so precise manual focussing was extremely difficult. I paid Katz to install the screen ($50) and they adjusted everything perfectly.
