Perhaps this is an ugly idea, but I'm using a Nikon AF-S f4 lens with a Nikon 1.4 TC at the moment and planning to buy a Nikon 1.7 TC as well.

For long-distance shots of waders would it be possible to use the lens with BOTH converters?

The lowest f stop would be what, F8?, the focal length on my D50 would be equivalent to a 1,000mm (300 x 1.5 cropping on sensor x 1.4 x 1.7)

Can it be done?
Does the AF still work?
Does this make me some kind of sicko who should never be allowed near a DSLR again?

Thanks

Dave

Can't help with Nikon gear but I sometimes stack 1.4x & 2x TCs together on a 500mm F4 lens with a Canon 1D mkII body > wide open this is F11 (F4 + 3 stops for the TCs) -the camera exif shows up as 500mm + 2x TC @ F8 but exposes appropriately. Autofocus is sluggish but does work & works well if the light conditions are bright & the target contrasty. In good light the results can be surprisingly good.

Hi Gandytron,
It is not possible to join a Nikon 1.4E11 tc and the 1.7E11 tc together, because the front and rear elements stick out too far to allow them to fit together.
It is however possible to fit either of these onto the back of the Nikon 2.0E11 tc, because the rear element of the 2x tc is sunk well back inside the converter.
Please note you can not fit the smaller converters onto the front of the 2xtc.
The AF will not work, and on an f4 lens the start aperature would be f11 with the 1.4 + 2x tc joined and about f13.5 with the 1.7 + 2x tc.
ie a loss of 3 stops in the first case, and 3.5 stops in the second.
I guess if you go down this route you will need manual focus and plenty of light.
regards I4ani.

On Romy Ocon's website, he describes (with photos) stacking converters onto his massive 300-800mm Sigmonster lens (with Canons, though) that's a 12.8 METRE(!) focal length. And it worked - here's the link (http://www.pbase.com/liquidstone/16x_tc)

Thanks guys, I thought this might be a problem, but interesting to know that it can be done with a 2x TC.

Best

An extension tube between the two would solve this problem. I believe I remember someone using this trick with dual 2x converters on a 500/4 L, and having quite respectable results.
