View Full Version : Samsung NV10 with remote control SRC-A3

The reason for writing this is I am quite tempted to buy a Samsung NV10 for the possibility of using the remote control SRC-A3, this appears a very nice solution to not having to touch the scope in anyway or having the remote cord flapping around and not making good contact with the shinny button with a home made adapter etc, etc.
I would like to know if any other manufactures offer a remote control for a similar priced setup, (I know you can get wireless remotes for the D2x but that’s obviously a different game entirely)
The s/scope I have is Nikon ED82 with 38w eyepiece and have tried some shots just holding a simple 6 MP Olympus up to the eyepiece with some very nice results.

I think the Samsung remote solution is probably the best value out there. I have wireless remotes for my Nikon 8400, Olympus 7070wz( there is a wired remote too with the optional battery pack),Canon G6 and a wired remote for the Ricoh GX100. I have a home-made mechanical remote for my Nikon CP4500 and Fuji F50fd.
Nothing for the Nikon P5100 unfortunately.

While I'm waiting for the postie to bring the remote, I've been addressing the problem of an adaptor to attach my NV10 10 to my Kowa 32X eyepiece, small enough to not foul the remote sensor next to the lens.
I found out some time ago that the rim at the base of the camera lens-mount is a nice snug fit for the lid from a 125ml can of Boots anti-mossie spray and by a strange coincidence the lid was exactly the same diameter as the top part of the telescope eyepiece. I butchered a lid, cut to the correct length to allow the camera's lens to extend snugly inside it to make a mount and sure enough, it worked perfectly to centre the camera lens over the eyepiece.
It held the camera nicely, but there wasn't enough length of eyepiece barrel indside the adaptor for a secure fit.
I left it at that until this thread started (I don't use the NV10 for digiscoping, my old 4500 is still first choice).
The problem with the eyepiece fit was a tiny step-up in barrel diameter just down from the top end. A step-up sleeve of a millimetre or so extra diameter was needed. A bit of searching around a DIY shop led me to the screw end of a bathroom waste pipe connection. It fitted the scope nicely, but needed a bit of work to make the hole at the other end bigger to accept the mossie-spray cap. An hour last night with a razor saw, a stanley knife and a bit of glue sorted that.
A nut and bolt, some time with a drill, stanley knife and file and a bit of hot-melt glue gave me a fastening screw, for added security.
Total cost - £1.79 (for the waste-pipe connector - the other stuff was lying around the house).
I need to get some paint tomorrow to finish the job, then wait for the remote to come.
Of course a different solution will be needed for other eyepieces, but the pricinple works.
I'll break my self-imposed embargo on posting photos to put up a couple of shots of my adaptor (sans-paint).

We have opposite scenarios. I have the Samsung RC-4 universal remote (bought on eBay), and am waiting for the postman to bring my NV10 camera. I will machine an adapter as soon as the camera arrives, and hope to have results posted soon thereafter.

The NV10 arrived today. It took me only an hour to complete the alignment collar, since I had machined all its dimensions except the bore for the camera lens. By midafternoon I was walking a trail in the nearby desert carrying my Pentax PF65A-II with XW14 eyepiece, looking for a subject. This Cactus Wren obliged.
I took this photo using the 2-second self-timer. The remote release RC-4 which I'd obtained earlier http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/284699-REG/Samsung_200122_RC_4_Universal_Remote_Control.html did not trip the shutter, as I'd assumed it would from its description as "for all Samsung P&S cameras." That's okay, it only cost me $4 from eBay including postage. So the SRC-A3 remote http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/520032-REG/Samsung_CZ1000019_SRC_A3_Remote_Control.html is evidently what this camera needs. I may not get it, though, since I see now from the Users Manual that the remote operates on a 2-second delay. This may detract from its usefulness for digiscoping.
The photo was taken at full telephoto. There is some corner vignetting. I suspect that my adapter situates the camera too close to the eyepiece. I shall experiment with the adapter length and report on what I find.

Hi Neil
Can you tell me how you've built a custom remote for you F50fd? I have just bought one and would really like to be able to trigger remotely.
Thanks,
Phil

I machined another adapter, about 0.125" longer than the first. This solves the problem of vignetting I was getting with the shorter adapter.
Here is a photo I took yesterday with the NV10, a green heron (Butorides virescens). This was done with the 2-second delay.

Phil,
I don't have a photo of the release but it's similar to the the SRB-Griturn device which would do the trick for you. Neil.

Well I ordered this through Amazon. They said a delivery period of 2-4 weeks, but I thought I'd live with that.
Today, 4 weeks after the order we have an email to say it's been delayed and it will now be mid-March before it arrives. I've cancelled the order and ordered one from elswhere for less money with next day delivery and they say it'll be here on Monday. Unfortunately I'll not be at home to receive it because I'll be off on holiday tomorrow. If Amazon had thought to send the email a day or so quicker I'd have had it delivered by now.

Alan - where did you find one? I have looked (seemingly) every where and can't find anyone with stock.

There was aplace called Jacobs who had them for £14.99, with a delivery of 7 days, a "small number in stock", but I saw their £8 delivery charge I looked again.
I've ordered it from abc digital cameras for £14.99 plus £3.40 p&p.
They say it's next working day delivery, but I'll wait and see. They've got a week before I 'll find out if they've managed. It's a pity I couldn't have got it a day or two sooner, the Coto Doñana would have been a good testing ground.

Update.
I've just had an email from abc. The remote is out of stock there, too. They've placed it on order.
The problem must lie with Samsung.

Well the remote finally arrived yesterday and I took it out for a short field test today.
Plusses
a) It's tiny
b) It's not expensive
c) It works at close range both in front of and behind the camera, not only within the cone shown in the manual
d) My home-made camera adaptor works
Minuses
a) There doesn't seem to be any "half-way" on the shutter release to allow you to hold the focus while the target bird gets its pose right. Press the button and the camera fires.
b) (a) isn't the disaster it could be because once you've pressed the button the camera waits 2 seconds for the bird to fly off or hide its head before the shutter fires.
c) In the event that the bird hasn't flown off before the camera fires you only get one frame per button-press. You can use the remote, you can use continuous shooting, but not both, so firing off half a dozen shots in the hope of one good one isn't on.
Oh, well. At least I tried.

That's a real deal-killer, for a remote for digiscoping. You confirm my suspicions voiced in reply #7.
I sold my NV10. The image quality is good, but I had trouble with that array of small buttons. Once I deleted all the images when I only wanted to delete the one image in the display -- this was caused by hitting a button only half a centimeter from the button I should have pushed.

I did exactly the same thing. I bought the camera on a whim at the airport on the way to Spain last spring and used it with great abandon throughout the holiday for holiday snaps.
When I got home I was reviewing the photos on my television and thinning out the weaklings before I downloaded them onto my computer. I hit the wrong button when my brain was in neutral and zap! The whole lot had gone.
I was in a state of shock and then I thought of trying Sandisc RescuePro. I had a copy on my computer that I'd almost forgotten I'd bought.
Job sorted! I got them all back again.;)

No problem, Averity. I enjoy messing about with stuff like that and it wasn't at all expensive. I'd call it useful experience.

For those that are having difficulty obtaining an NV10, Opticron are advertising the Samsung NV15 with the remote and their own adapter which has a 28mm thread so fits their digiscoping adapter and a whole host of other manufacturers adapters. This is currently advertised on the Opticron website
