Well a start would be scattering seeds on the ground. This bird is more of a ground forager at least it starts there and then might hop up unto a perch feeder. My Smithsonian books Birds of N.A recommends a mixture of oats, suet and seeds.

I got this one by pure luck. Have only seen him once in the 7 months I have been in this house.

Towhees are exclusively ground feeders, so the best way to attract them would be to throw some seed on the groud neer a brushy area, which is their preffered habitat. If you just want to see one on LI, visit Robert Moses State Park on the south shore during spring and summer and you'll see numerous males singing from the tops of small pines there.

Hi all,

Just thought I would let you know that although I now live in Philadephia, I was born and raised for 21 years in Stony Brook, LI. Last time I went home over the holidays I gifted my parents a suet feeder - they scatter seeds on the ground as well in the backyard and they get a towee now and then as well.

good call by bebirder - I have some old christmas trees down in my yard - and that is where they like to hang on there way through. The do seem to need some brushy cover.
