Unless you plan on spending over $1000 US, I would avoid 10 power binos. They are simply more expensive to make well. Even well-made, with 10 power it's harder to hold the image steady and the field of view is narrower than a comparable 8x bino.

Everything you can see with a 10x bino you can see with 8x. You won't miss any ids. The image in the 10x will be a little bigger, but it will also be darker and less clear. I would recommend 8x42 binos for a first glass.

I have not liked 10x36, so probably not 10x30 either. Go for the 10x40.

I ignored the actual question. Shame on me.

If you gotta go 10, go 10x40.

I'll second that. Got a pair a few months ago, love 'em. Light in the hand and steady, best 10x image I've ever seen, with the FOV of an 8x glass. Much cheaper than 10x by the big 3 european manufacturers (but not waterproof). Problem with Nikon EII 10x35 is that you may have to do a bit of research to find a pair, as they're off the menu in Europe and North America. A few stores in the UK still have a few pairs in stock, though. I got mine from Ace Optics in Bath. Another alternative, if you like high magnification, is Canon IS 12x36. Light, image rock-steady, objectives still the best of both worlds!

You will like the Nikon 10 x 35 EII, if you can ever get your hands on one! You betcha!:t:
