Donald - please be aware that fitting a tc to this lens will lose autofocus in all but exceptionally bright conditions eg. southern spain in June! Likewise you'll also need a rock solid tripod and head. Might be worth you searching the gallery (http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/search.php) to see what results other people have had with this combination. Just enter the name of the lens and the teleconverter into the keyword box and make sure "search all fields" and "contain all words" are highlighted. In general fitting a tc to a slow zoom zens is one to avoid.

I would agree with not using a converter with the Tamron. I have the 200-500 and really love it. It's pretty darn sharp wide open at 500 and that's why you buy it. It's no prime and not even close, but it's better than the other similarly priced zooms.
I tried a 1.4 Nikon on mine and that sharpness vanished.

I also would not agree to using a TC on the Tamron. I have the 200-500 and tried a 1.4 TC. It will work but only in bright light and then it hunts. The photos are also soft. It seems to work a little better on closer subjects and shows a little better detail, but cropping works just as well. I thought it might be the TC as it was not very expensive (Tamron 1.4) but I am now using it on my Nikon 300/4 with no noticeable change in IQ so it was not the TC.
