I've been in Sydney for a week and it was raining there too (It's been drizzling and cold in Hong Kong for over a month now ).
I didn't do much digiscoping as the light wasn't much good so I had the D3 plus Nikon 300/f4 AFS and Nikon 1.4x tele with me most of the time. My Default iso was 1600 and I was hand holding. I didn't use a tripod with this combo the whole week.
Here are a few of the grab shots as I walked around .

The first shot looks noisy but the rest are pretty damn fine. Love the Black-shouldered Kite.

The Black-faced Monarch image (first one) was in particularly poor light under trees so I used iso 6400 . I didn't use any Noiseware-type adjustment but it could be smartened up a bit. Neil.

ps I had even worse light problems with the Bald Eagles in Canada but the iso 6400 got me some images that others couldn't get.

ISO6400 is always going to be noisy, but its pretty amazing that the image is still very usable.
