any body ouy there any experience of the above lens ,at the moment i am using the nikon d300 +70/300 vr but realy need something bigger for bird photography. i was also considering the sigma 50/500 but would the quality be as good as the nikon.
ps i only have a budget of aprox £1000.00

I would go for the 300 f4 AFS and 1.4 converter combination. Not much more reach at 420mm but you would notice a big improvement in quality.

do you think the quality would be better with the converter than the sigma without.

I would hold out for the imminent release of sigmas new OS zooms to at least see what reviews say but from the looks of them they should be promising (threads in the Third Party Lens forum).
