Had 3 Blackbirds taking advantage of the bright light around one of her majesty's prisons this afternoon.
It got dark here at around about 4PM today, but these birds were actively feeding on short turf at 17:17 !
Ive heard various species sing after dark, esp. near man made light sources, & esp. Robins.
But cant think of seeing more than one individual. (Very cold all day there, with adjacent water body icing over in the last hour of daylight)
Anyone seen birds use Artificial light ??

I have a Robin who always comes after dark to his special bird food(he shares it with the Blackbirds). The feeding area is lit with light from 2 windows, all other birds,Sparrows,Starlings etc have long gone, also the Blackbirds, but the Robin always seems to come for a last feed before the long cold night.

Did a double check of the same place this afternoon & found 2 Blackbirds still feeding at 17.05PM
Are they simply taking advantage of the prison lights ?
OR
Have they got mouths to feed ?

The blackbirds will be stocking themselves up with
their last feed of the day, it must be a long night
for them, in this cold frosty weather.

IN our garden, the robin is the first to arrive and the last to leave!! I try to clear up the husks of the
sunflower seed just before dusk, and as i rake them up he follows me round checking under the leaves
i have moved. then when the outside light comes on
he will start to sing! great fun.

Just remembered,
We had 5-6 seperate sightings of different Spotted Flycatchers feeding at various times during the night this year in Ibiza. (22:00 - 04:30)
These birds seemed to be taking insects which were attracted to the street lights.

Artificial light, Not taking advantage, but being confused, Twice I've had Hummingbirds, disoriented by my Fluoresent lights, and turned the lights off, to help them leave.
