View Full Version : Waterproof Camera Covers

Spent today at Titchwell and surrounding area in the rain, so decided to leave my camera in the car, to prevent damage. Just wondering if any of you use waterproof camera & lens covers? Those with cameras today did not appear to use anything. Have seen some insulated / waterproof covers on ebay for about £20. Just wondering if they are of benefit? Missed some super shots but more worried about my equipment getting wet. Any thoughts welcome.
Cheers

Hi Hippo,
Try wildlifewatching supplies, they do an execellent version for camera and lens attached, not the cheapest but very good.It fits over the body and lens and you can get to the camera controls very easy.Camo one side and dark green the other.
Can't remember their web address, but try www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.com

Yep I bought one for my D200 and smaller lenses (70-200 and 300/4), works a treat, one tip though. you've gotta keep the back open to hold the camera so I have tried 2 different thing to aid protection either wrap the back of the body in cling film or get one of those shower caps you get in hotel rooms and place it on the back, the elastic naturally forms around the lens so any stray rain drops won't effect the back of the camera

I have one of these too. It fits over my 500/4 even with the doubler on. I it some way along the length of the lens hood so that it covers the camera whilst not closed up. This allows me quick access to the camera to take images. Mine is reversible camo/waterproof so is dual purpose.

My pro friend in Holland uses a very hi-tech method- clear plastic bag and elastic bands. With the lens hood on fairly waterproof and you can still see all the buttons.

Hippo. If nothing else, after a bit of practice with that you should be well on the way to an alternative career as a ventriloquist or puppeteer. ;)

Oh yes! You can now go out in all weathers so the need for "other" entertainment is reduced :eek!::-O;)

A fool and his money are soon parted;)
Not really suited for my needs. Designed mainly for use with camera on tripod. Fiddly to set up and appears too large for my outfit (Canon 400d and Sigma 175 - 500) needing rubber bands too hold lens cover down. A bit like a tea cosy. No way of using neck strap easily if hand holding. Noise reduction debatable as sounds very rustly. Becoming a puppeteer is becoming more attractive;) Needs to be set up before going out as it would be very awkward if weather changes requiring fitting rapidly. I think the use of a plastic bag and rubber bands is the alternative:t:
Horses for courses but this item is not for me:-C

Thanks Kevin,
Always good to have an honest review, I was really only interested in the sound aspect, and not the water proofing.
I did recomend to you the Wildlifewatching piece of kit, as I and others have said, cost a little bit, but very good.
If you are into diy ,then there was another thread on here, some months back where people were cutting arms/legs off of cheap water proof suits and making elasticated cuffs to fit around camera/lens.Some one on admin might help you find thread if that interests you.
regards.

Regarding plastic bags as covers, I used one recently in a strong wind (+rain/sleet) and the sound of it flapping scared all the birds away. I think I'll try the wildlife watching supplies one - in fact I nearly asked them to send me one while I was on holiday!

Did anyone ever get a Wildlife Supplies all-in-one cover? I'd be intersted to know what opinions are, and how the tripod mount works given that the cover is in place? I have a Sigma f4.5 lens with non-detactable tripod mount collar.

I use a Rain Hood, very similar to http://www.ewa-marine.de/index.php?id=515
Attached was taken underneath the Earland falls in NZ. I thought it'd be wet but I was totally wrong! Driving horizontal water and despite my excellent waterproofs I got wet - but camera didn't!

hi Kevin
Have you managed to get what you want yet or have you resorted to other alternatives?
My camera is more basic (Coolpix S200), and when we bought the camera not so long ago we where given a free Camera Box for it. It is guaranteed Watertight, dustproof, Shockproof etc.
To me it is a robust box and would protect a camera for all the daily use that it gets.
The make is Peli products if that is any use to you. I think it is for more basic cameras though.

Hi Kathy
I have decided that a large robust plastic bag is best with rubber bands - cheap & cheerful:t: If it is really bad, camera stays in the car ;)

Hi,
My wife has just made a camo waterproof cover for my 350d + Bigma 50-500mm lens setup (for tripod use) its very good too! elasticated front for going round the lens hood, velcro opening underneath for easy fitting and wired opening at the rear for easy viewing of the controls etc! (the wire is a great idea as you can bend it to fit the shape of camera if you know what i mean?) tried it on the patio today very breezy/damp with no problems.
She said to ask if anyone wants one making they are just £10.00 + £2.00 postage which i think is a bargain? + its still looks the business LoL
If anyone want to see a photo then give me a shout and i will post one.
Cheerio
Brian
Ps She also made me a very nifty tripod shelf! same camo fabric and will fit any tripod and slots over the legs when closed once open it stays in place!, its great when your in the popup hides etc somewhere to rest spare batteries etc (better than dropping them on the floor)? I think she can make these for £5.00 + £2.00 postage. Who said wives were useless? LoL

Being the skinflint I am, I always carry around a few showercaps (free in some hotels) that do the job well. I usually tear a small hole in the back, to access the viewfinder. Just discard after use.
They're usually less noisy than carrier bags too.

That's what I now use :t: However, since purchasing, I have only used once, but certainly did the job :t: I suppose carrying them is a form of insurance ;)
Now, what can I do about the poor light at this time of year - a torch maybe? ;)

Just a thought, has anyone tried Cameras Underwater? They specialise in underwater camera housings but they also do a range of rain covers.
