View Full Version : Nut bags destroyed

For some weeks I have been wondering what had been happening to my net nut bags. I'd buy new ones, put them out and go to work and when I came in they would be empty and shredded so, off I'd go and buy new ones.

I've recently had a weeks holiday so, had some time to sit and watch the birds at our feeding station (I was writing my essay - honest!). I saw a Rook come and land on the string (from which the nut bags are suspended). He gained his balance, then worked his way along to a red net bag. He worked the slack up between his feet and then ripped into it, scattering nuts everywhere. Sorry about the poor picture quality but, it was a hastily snatched bit of video before he flew off.

The little tinker, it's amazing what they'll get up to in an effort to get a bit of food.

We have square fat block holder suspended from the bird table so that only the smaller birds can use it. Now though, a pair of Magpies have found that by fly-leaping four feet off the ground they can sometimes grab a mouthful or dislodge somme bits. They amicably take turns. I've tried for a few photos too, but it's been too dull of late.

Cheeky monkeys! Must be worth it to watch them though...

Kiki, I was just wondering if the action of the Rook was acceptable to you, or are you wishing to preserve the nut bags. If it's the latter, one idea is to snip off the top and bottom of the bag, and roll it down, over the outside of a wiremesh feeder. You will then have a wire-mesh reinforced red bag feeder.
