hello members, thinking of changing from 30D to 40D but cannot make up my mind! with what I've read it's better at high I.S.O. and the burst rate is better with more m.pixels, but is it worth it?also I've read on other forums people having problems with one thing and another,is there anything to look out for? many thanks Brian

I have heard that it is not a huge upgrade. Certainly the 40d is better. Do you need any lenses I feel that a glass upgrade at least for me would happen before a 30d to 40d upgrade. You may be set with lenses though that I don't know.

For the price the 40D is superb value. I bought mine for less than half what I paid for my 20D. The 40D is a step up in both features and image quality but the 30D is a great camera. Unless you feel it is ready to die then hang onto it and you may get the benefit of further price drops. I still use my 20D even though it has an exposure fault.

As for problems, you cannot test out the camera you hope to buy. You have to take a risk with any consumer product such as a camera. you are of course protected with warranties and consumer law.

I have both the 30D and 40D. Since getting the 40D the 30D stays at home unless I need a second body. Well worth the upgarde IMO.

If you do get the 40D (an excellent price at the moment), I would advise a thorough test of the AF, checking for front-focussing and with the Canon 1.4x attached (if you have one), interchanging with your 30D as I did, but do it ASAP after purchase.
Take a look at the "AF Query" thread to see my problem.

I'd go for the upgrade for just one new feature - the custom settings on the options dial. Being able to instantly switch between basic settings for 1. Static Objects; 2. Birds in Flight and 3. Low-light is a real boon.

One more: I've got two 30Ds which are literally gathering dust since I got my 40D.

The 20D to 30D was pretty much a cosmetic upgrade. Mostly what the 30D added over the 20D was spot metering. However the 30D to 40D is a much bigger upgrade. The 40D has a new sensor and processor, improved AF, live view, higher resolution, larger buffer, faster burst, etc. If you're photographing a lot of action it will definitely be a noticeable improvement.

20D to 40D is a big jump. 30-40, not sure as I never used a 30D. If it was me, for the price of the upgrade, I would make the jump - I don't know to any plans of Canon to introduce a 50D yet and the 40D is a reasonable price now so go for it.
