I seen a review of the 450D in Amateur Photographer and their opinion was that Canon had compromised too much with a few points rather than nailing it as the must have DSLR. In fact the 450D was placed lower than the Nikon D60 and Sony's latest DSLR, both of these cameras were rated better for IQ than the 450D!

AP is usually pro Nikon/anti Canon.

They don't know how to test cameras in a way that is relevant to bird photography either - the "superior" IQ from the Nikon D60 and Sony offering is a result of in-camera NR.

Fine - if detail doesn't matter...

Just look here (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS450D/page28.asp) for a better idea of IQ comparisons between the Canon and the Nikon and here (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS450D/page29.asp) for the Sony.

In both cases the Canon examples are far sharper and more detailed - miles better.

And here (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS450D/page32.asp) you can see what happens at higher ISOs...

Anyone disagree? Take it up with DPR, not me.

I have had a 450D for approx 6 weeks and my opinion is that it is a very good camera. I had the 350D before that and the difference is quite noticeable. There is less noise when shooting at 800 ISO, I have not tried the 1600 ISO so am unable to comment on this.
I like the feature of the monitor having all the information on the screen and being able to change the ISO without having to go into the menu, the image quality is much better enabling a much tighter crop, also the live view is an advantage, but I must say that the camera needs to be on a tripod to use this feature successfully, as it enables you to focus then enlarge the image to check the result. It has excellent battery life.
The memory cards are SD and I was a little bit put out at having to change from compact flash, but I was able to buy a 4GB Sandisk for £9.99.

Attached is an example of how tight the image can be cropped.

That's a very good example, Damselfly - the cropped whitethroat really does still have a high level of detail and sharpness.

DPR is very impressed with the 450D's sensor.

Sorry Keith, don't shoot the messenger just passing on some info.

And yet it could be better still as they say it was deliberately held back by Canon so as not to outshine the 40D. Sounds like the perfect backup body.

IT would be if it used the same card and battery Canon let a lot of people down by not makeing it 40d friendly.

The difference in price is only £50 (with the 40D £100 cashback) which is the price of a decent sized card and third party battery and one of the reasons I've bought a 40D rather than the 450.
