Just got a Neoprene lens cover set to protect my 400 f5.6. The set comes in 5 pieces and works very well. The piece that covers the section of lens which is not visible when the hood is retracted has velcro so you can easily detach when retracting the hood and then refit when the hood is in position. Also included is a 2 piece converter set.
I ordered olive green thinking it was a pattern but it is just plain colour, but all was not lost, just turn them inside out and you have the advantage timber patern so handy if you ever want a change ;)

Cost is about £34 with P&P from http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk/

I was looking at these the other day and wondered how it dealt with the sliding hood... any chance that you could post a couple of photos of it on the lens as their website doesn't show it.

Just popped outside and took a few snaps Pete.
First one in the hood closed position. Second on hood in place. Third one attaching the part with the velcro on.

Thanks for the photos Roy, it looks like a well made cover. I assume you can still access the focus limit switch...?

They also produce a more expensive alternative (http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk/all_in_one_cover.htm) 'loose' all in one cover including one model with a fleece lining. A matching endcap is also available here (http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk/lens_cap.htm).

I know one of the members here has one and is very happy with it and I'm just about to order one myself.

You just lift the piece over the limiter/AF manual switch to get at it - very easy and fast.

Note: if you order an Olive set and then reverse for the Timber pattern the seams where the parts are stitched will be on the outside - no big deal but worth mentioning.

If these are made in pieces, then I presume they don't offer any protection against the rain - the gaps being just where you need the protection?

The all-in-one cover seems more useful. Currently I just carry a bin bag around in case the rain starts, but it's a pain putting it on and taking it off. Not very functional either, and a bit noisy.

.
They do not claim to offer any protection against rain. I got them to give the lens a bit of protection against knocks and pings. The neoprene has also got a nice feel to it for hand holding IMO.
