Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows how long the Black-winged Stilts at Neumann's Flash are likely to stay there. I'd like to go and see them and could make a special trip, but ideally I'll pop in as I go past on a trip to Wales in early July (6th).

Does anyone know when they are likely to start their migration? i.e. How long is it for a Stilt chick from fledging to being ready for migration? Or should I not worry about it and be confident that they'll be there at least well into July?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bird hatched on 28 May I think, BWP says fledging period is 28–32 days and young become independent c.*2–4 weeks after fledging which would take us to Late July/ August. I Imagine you'd be ok on 6 July though the youngster will be able to fly by then and they may relaocate elsewhere I guess

Thanks Rob,

Excellent work: that's exactly the info I wanted. I think I'll be patient and go when I'm passing, unless I find I have the spare time before then (unlikely...).

All the best

Hi, I went up to Neumanns Flash yesterday and there are signs up saying that the Stilts have now left. The RSPB think the chick was predated on Friday 20th June.
