Stop the flash on 400d

Hi everyone, my first post here, I bought the EOS 400D with the efs 60 macro in Feb. and have been very pleased with the results on flower pics.
I have been useing the auto setting and AV but for some reason the flash keeps going off even in good daylight, I have tried the flash off setting which seems to be auto without flash but can anyone tell me how to turn off the flash in AV mode?

I think I'm right in saying that in AV the flash will fire if it's up but not if it's not... so just closing it up should solve the problem.
