Does anyone have any experience (good or bad !!) of any of the National Cycle Network or any other good cycle touring routes ?

I'm just looking into a possiblity of combining a bit of cycling / birding etc during the summer but don't have any knowledge of these routes outside of Norfolk. I reckon on somewhere between 3 & 6 days, maybe 20 ish miles a day depending on terrain, but with plenty of scenery & nature etc.

Thanks in advance.

No personal experience, but you might find the Sustrans website helpful:

Yes thanks Elizabeth they've certainly got all the routes on there, and also Halfords shops are pretty good as well. It'd just be interesting to hear if anyones got any personal recommendations for particular routes.

Hi Carlos,

There's some good cycle routes in coastal Northumberland, if that's of interest. Excellent birding, too.

The ones through Cleveland are pretty good too if you make it up this far. They're very handy for some superb birding locations.

Hi Carlos,

July's a fairly quiet time, though Roseate Terns will be showing very well at Coquet Island (short boat trip from Amble). Any particular species you'd be interested in seeing?

If cycling in Cleveland, remember a gas mask ;)

There is the Cumbrian Cto C walk,Carlos, good for cycling, and it will take you through the reserve where the nesting terns will be in residence here at the Hodbarrow reserve.

Ouch! - but I guess you're right - the birds don't seem to mind though - plenty of Bittern, Lesser Yellowlegs and of course the six LEO's today :bounce:

Thanks for the ideas, I'll give those some thought ... no Michael, no real targets as such.

It's just come up as an idea for the summer thats all.
