Hi..I have been using a Canon S2 IS for birding basically in my immediate neighborhood. I have MS and some mobility problems and use a monopod or tripod as needed. I was thinking of getting a Rebel XTis. Is their an advantage to upgrading or should I stick with what I have?. ..Michelle..

Hi Michelle,
I too have quite a few health problems and my mobility is pretty bad, i have the Canon 350d and use various forms of support like Tripod/Monopod and also my trusty Kaiser shoulder pod. Only thing i would have liked on the 350d is the live viewfinder is this available on the XTis ? if so then i would go for it as they are great camera's and there's plenty of good lenses to fit them for birding try for a 300mm + this would be ok for garden birds etc you can also add a 1.4x teleconverter which should work ok and keep autofocus etc.
Photography is a great hobby for disabled people now digital has arrived andsince taking it up it also opened my eyes to the sheer beauty of nature which cannot be a bad thing?
Cheerio and have fun

Ps don't know if you have one but invest in a remote trigger for the EOS if you buy one as it helps to avoid camera shake

Compact cameras such as the Canon S2 are much lighter and by definition more compact to hold.

However if you can use a monpod or preferably tripod then a DSLR will enable much better results. As already meantioned by stevo photography from the car is very effective technique which I also I frequently use even just supporting the camera on a bean bag on the window edge - though I must admit the Ergo rest is a very good piece of kit as well.

The XTis is a very good camera. Really a 400mm lens at least would be needed as well which can be combined with a teleconverter if needed.

The Canon S2 is a first rate camera but I found upgrading to a DSLR a massive step forward in terms of photographic results.

Brian..the XTis does have a live viewfinder. A question about the lens? A "300mm +". Could you explain a bit?

Birding. It has been wonderful for my mental outlook. We live on a pond so there are always ducks, herons and other birds to photograph. I also like to watch butterflies, dragonflies, frogs etc. I even photographed some fungus<G>..Michelle (US)

Hi All,

Would anyone know of a photography forum for people with disabilities? I have my share. I've made due in various ways but it would be great to hear how other people have adapted.

Thanks!
