Dozens of birds have been washed up on Tendring's coast following an oil slick off the Belgian coast. About 30 injured birds have been found so far, and the number is rising. Some oil has also been seen on Dovercourt's Blue Flag award-winning beach, although it is not thought the prestigious title will be at risk. Wildlife experts have warned thousands of birds could die because of the spill. Gary Jeeves, 48, of Dovercourt, said: "It is in a dreadful state. We were walking along there with the dogs and they were covered in oil."

As I was coming home from work yesterday the local radio news announced that some beaches on the south Devon coast had been affected also and quite a few oiled birds had been seen as well. God help the wildlife when that boat cracks completely open and the remaining oil spills out.
