I have 3 pairs of cheap to mid range binoculars with twist up eyecups that twist back down as easily (but annoyingly) as they twist up.
I remember seeing a thread on here some time back regarding this with various suggestions, but at the time most were just 'work arounds'.
Well this weekend I had enough when my two boys were using them and were struggling with this 'feature'.
So I stripped the cheaper (but suprisingly good) pair (Helios Mistral 8x32) rubbers off the eyecups to take a look and have found the fix.
As the base of the eyepiece is metal, I twisted the cups to the fully out.
Then using lightweight pliers (actually Gerber legend) and carefully squeezed the 3 slots/grooves (the channels cut out of the eyepiece to facilitate movement) in and around the slots where they meet the fixing points.
Each 'tweak' I checked the amount of force required to twist down and up the eyecups.
Once satisfied that the eyecups could still be 'twisted down' whilst still staying up under general use, I replaced the rubbers.
I repeated the same with the other two bins
(you could reglue the rubber but I haven't found it necessary just yet).
I hope some of you find this useful.
