we were driving along the a140 next to the mendlesham mast on friday 25th and we saw a big bird of prey being mocked by a crow about 20 feet above the road when we passed under we saw it was a red kite. Its the first ive seen in the wild and we were very surprised to see one here.
Anyone else seen any near here?
I know they have been seen at minsmere and in norfolk.
Thought it may be of interest to you, but maybe it is old news!!??

I heard a pair bred in Suffolk near Lowestoft in the last few years though I'm not sure they continue to do so.
Great they've spread so far from the original release sites...B (:

Thats interesting Paul. I live just up the road from wolves wood and regularly visit. Well guess they are about more frequently than i realised! Thanks for the feed back. Mark.

hi mark
i don't know how regularly they are seen in this area i've only ever seen the one although i've heard reports of others
i live quite near wolves wood but don't go often as i never seem to see much, on a couple of occasions i,ve walked around without seeing anything at all although to be fair that was at the height of summer in the middle of the day and there were loads of insects to keep me occupied, have you seen much in there
cheers

The red kites that used to breed close to lowestoft were present well before the release scheme and were considered contential birds. However several different single birds from the release scheme have been seen in Suffolk over the past couple of years.

We had a report of a Chilterns 2007 kite in Norfolk a few months ago. Always good to get reports of those whose wing tags are readable.
Info on how to read wing tags at website in signature block.
