What is your favorite method of holding your binoculars? I try to get used to the two-hand, elbows underneath, but I find myself moving my elbows forming a 80 degree angle. Neither is overly steady for me. And the elbows-under is just uncomfortable (bigger upper body). The last few days, I have been playing with the one-hand-monopod method, with my right hand spread wide and elbow tucked underneath, with the left hand used lightly for stability as needed. The obvious disadvantage is focusing, but once focused, I find I can hold the binoculars MUCH more steady. I need to balance the binoculars correctly to start, but that reduces strain on the arm. I will need to practice more, but I am wondering if you have other methods that work well for you. Incidentally, the binoculars I have been using are the Zeiss Nightowl 10x56 and the Zeiss Classic 7x42. Thanks, and I look forward to your responses.

Use the "baseball cap " technique given to us by John Barsness in his great book "Optics for the Hunter".

To use this technique, you need to consider the bill of the cap as a tripod. To use, focus on your subject then, with the first two fingers of each hand, reach up and grasps the bill of the cap. Relax your arm muscles and let the tension on the cap act as your steading influence.

Additionally, try to assume a steadier position then standing, and look for some support for your elbows. (works well from a sitting position).
