Yes, you can only see the pictures you have taken if there is a memory card in the camera. If there's no card then it stands to reason that you can't see the pictures.

I suggest turn shoot without card on in the menu, You don't want to accidently forget to replace your card and fail to get that elusive shot. It has happened i promise!!!!

I have no idea why shoot without card is ON by default. Seems quite daft to me.

I have no idea why shoot without card is ON by default. Seems quite daft to me.Because that mode allows shop assistants in Dixons, etc. to demo the camera without putting a card in it. Inserting cards is normally beyond their capabilities.

I totally agree, and it caught me out when I bought my 20D. It was ON (funny as the camera was secondhand) and I took some good shots, only to find when I went to review them there was...nothing! I soon rectified it by switching that option to OFF and it was the first thing I did when I got my 40D.

Thanks Frank, I was struggling to think of a reason. The best I was able to come up with was 'to keep you on your toes'.

I'm confused. Does this mean that if you have shoot without a card switched on then you cannot store pics on a card. If not wouldn't this be the sensible option?|=\|
Just read the manual and I now understand. It prevents you taking shots without a card in. All's clear now. It's something I had never even considered but now I've got it switched OFF. Or is it ON?

In the menu you need to switch Shoot without card to OFF Thus preventing you from accidently going on a shoot without a card in your camera ( I know i got it the wrong way round in my first post and now cannot edit it) With it ON and a card in you can still use your camera and it will still write to the CF card as usual but will also allow you to take pictures without a card in but not store them anyware
