Can anyone give me some advice. I am going to Poland at the end of January, hopefully seeing wolves, elk etc. I have a Nikon D80 and Canon 590is both of which state will operate at above 0c. The temperature could reach -15/-20. Does anyone know of the best way to keep cameras warm but not lose the opportunity to take the picture when it happens.

There's a few pages of info here that should help.

Here in Canada, we also have very cold weather. When I go out, I carry 2 batteries - one in the camera and one in a warm pocket - when the camera stops, just change batteries.

Also, when going in a shelter to warm up, leave the camera outside to avoid fogging of the lens.

The attached picture of a Great Grey Owl was taken in 2005 at -25C. Let me tell you that the camera was not the problem part...

Paul / Jules. Thank you both, that has put my mind at rest. Bob

I echo Jules' recommendations: keep spare batteries in an inside shirt pocket (batteries lose their charge rapidly in cold weather), keep camera protected from fog or snow (there are very inexpensive clear plastic rainsleeves: check out Op-Tech rainslseeve) and when coming in from the old, watch for condensation on camera lens and other parts.
