Hi guys, can someone please let me know if the old Sigma 170-500mm f5-6.3 APO works on a 40d . I can get hold of one fairly cheap , and think it would be ok on a tripod..
cheers

My Sigma 500 f7.2 APO certainly doesn't work on my 10D and later bodies. (It was OK on my Eos 50E film SLR.) If the info isn't on the Sigma website, I suggest you email your local Sigma distributor.

I had one that worked fine with my 350D - don't know for certain that it would work with 40D but can't think why it wouldn't. Can you not take your body and give it a quick try before you buy?

Cheers guys. I think I'll just take the body in and test it to be on the safe side. I know that the non DG one's won't auto-focus with newer bodies.

All the DG means is its coated specially for digital sensors(to stop flare I think)I wouldn`t of thought it`d make difference with a newer body. Its usually the chip in the lens that causes problems.

Steve, the older non-DG one's have older chips mate, and I've heard a few tales about those one's not retaining auto-focus.
I've since decided to save my pennies and get something else :-)
