Dear 50D birders
I should like to see some really great bird pics from the 50D cos most of the pics I have seen from the 50D have been without very fine details as though the NR is smearing these fine details out..., and if NR is off, the pics seem to be too noisy. I should like to see some pic examples telling me that I am totally wrong.....
Thank you in advance.

I had the 50D for 10 days.
I did not manage good pics. So I sent it back and bought a 40 D.
Now it is all going well.

To say these were taken through glass the fieldfare images are particularly impressive. The Exif data says they were shot at 400mm focal length but I'm curious just what lens was used please?

I suspect it was the 400 f5.6 Martin, is what it says just below the pics in the equipment bit.

Martin, it was the 400 f5.6 lens its a permanent fixture. In my gallery there is a photo of my back garden with the angle of view through the window towards the apple tree on the far bottom right of the photo, you can just make out the tree with the apples on.

As everybody else apparently do have problemes to find some fine bird pics from the 50D I have in the meantime found some myself in this gallery:

The 50D is certainly capable of stunning images - have a look here, although not bird pics.

Can't produce any brilliant pictures, but have just bought the 50d after awful problems with focussing on the 40d, and have posted my first taken with the 50d, in the gallery of a Fieldfare this afternoon! The light was poor so I am more than pleased with the camera and after the 40d - the focussing is brilliant.

I can only think that your 40D had a problem Kim as I have had no problems at all focusing with the 40D - I also have a 30D and reckon the 40D is better, especially in low light.
As far as I am aware the 40D and 50D have the same AF system.

I agree Roy- I am sure that it was my 40d - so I decided not to wait any longer for it to finally stop focussing again. It was a nuisance -I kept having to focus manually and having followed other peoples problems on BF - decided to trade it in., I did not get a wonderful price for it - but have no regrets - the difference is huge - in the focussing I mean - not necessarily on the end result -although the Fieldfare was taken yesterday in very poor light and the 50d focussed instantly - I haven't had this experience for a long time!!

Ah, so this advice is a bit too late. But it may be helpful for others.
The AF sensors for all the Canon dSLRs I've seen are on the floor of the mirror box. Twice I've seen AF problems that were, I believe, caused by small particles of dust on the AF sensor. The problems were cured by going into manual sensor cleaning mode and blowing with a Rocket Blower into the bottom of the box.
