Try Googling Martins Camera Shop. It's in West Yorkshire. I bought a Canon 400mm lens from them in the summer. Took a bit longer to arrive then they predicted but otherwise decent service.

Martin's cameras, I enquired there, they are cheap but they do have to order in the big-guns and wanted me to pay up front for the 500 f4 but couldn't give me a precise delivery date. They also do a deal where if you dont pay with a credit card you get 3% off. Quite a saving if you can pay cash or cheque. easy if you near their shop, Leeds I think.
Its a pity because at their prices, if they held stock they could make a name for themselves once word got around and do some serious business.

Hi Tom,
Pity you are so far away. If you happen to be up in E.Lothian I would be happy to show you my 500f4 and I have 1.4 & 2 TC IIs. I don't have a 400 2.8 - not a popular lens for birding as it is, IIRC, even heavier than a 600f4.
Maybe a member nearer you could make a similar offer ?
Mike.

What about London Camera Exchange and Calumet - tend to advertise their extensive range - assume Leeds would have both, I know Manchester does.

This is a difficult one - particularly for those of us who tend to work alone. The only place where I've seen other people using long Canon L lenses has been at RSPB and WWT sites. I think I saw an EF 300 f2.8L IS in my local Jessops about 2 years ago, but as I'd never buy such an item from them, I didn't ask them to open their display case.
I've found using the heavy lenses takes time and usage to perfect, so it's difficult to work out what you get from trying a specialist lens in a shop when you're interested in birding. (Other than how heavy they are in the short term.) Certainly typical shop window glass isn't likely to be good enough to allow any meaningful check on sharpness.
I've also found it difficult to find 1D series bodies in local shops, and it's fair to say that I've bought most of my long lenses and my 1D MkIII based on careful reading of websites.

He probs meant the f4 DO Mike.
Does Calumet in Liverpool stock big lenses? Other than a shop you might have to go to a show of some sort but don't know how you'd get info for such events.

Dale Photographic in the Merrion Centre, Leeds. Steve, Paul and dad Allan give great service and will price match. They are nikon and Canon pro-dealers. Been using them for nearly 40 years - no complaints. Family business for the enthusiast. Will also sell your old gear for you.
