hi there
new to bird photography looking for a lens was close to getting canon 400 f5.6 for 900 and then found out jessops are doing the sigma bigma for 570
is the canon worth 400 pounds more any thoughts thanks

£900 for the 400 f5.6 sounds very high - I paid a fair bit less than that for a new one imported from the US last year. It's a great lens, the IQ is almost as good as the big Canon primes - definitely better than the Bigma.

Warehouse Express have the 400 f/5.6 for £829 which sounds about right to me. I think you may have got lucky with the dollar being weak.
I'd say that the 400 is worth the money - but I've not used the Bigma

Sorry about that, I didn't check the current pricing before posting, I clearly bought mine at the right time. £830 does seem to be the best UK price and imports don't look much difference at the minute. I do still think that the 400 f5.6 is worth the extra money, perhaps it's worth looking out for a good secondhand one.

Here is a interesting thread about the bigma v 400/5.6 started by a avid bigma user. The thing that struck him most was how little difference there was in actual focal length.
