Hi Steve
It's hard to answer your question. If the 30D is going for £50 quid from someone with good feedback, then sure, I'd dive in. You just need to use common sense with buying 2nd hand and it helps me to consider how much I'd pay for the equivalent camera new (40Ds seem to be starting around £550+ after a quick search on google).
I bought a near mint lens off ebay a couple of years ago and it was excellent, it's still getting regular use today. Good luck in your decision.

I used one before changing to 40D-an excellent camera.
Much depends on how much you can get if for (as against a used 40D-now the 50D is out).
If you can get a 40D then I would recommend doing that-but a 30D will make you happy|:d|
There is at least 1 for sale on BF (see thread below) and generally I would rather buy from here the someone completely unkown on fleabay-but again price etc. will dictate.

I've bought lenses secondhand - but they tend to retain their value well. SLRs on the other hand lose value rapidly as they age so its worth not getting carried away. But if it's genuinely hardly used and going for a song its probably worth a shot.

As well as my new DSLR purchases, I've bought two Canon DSLRs used, a 30D and a 1D MkIII, from UK sources advertising on the web. In both cases, I checked their implied warranty terms carefully before purchase, and both my buys turned out well with no problems. The external condition seemed better than their ads implied.
I've only bought very low cost items off ebay, so can't help, but there's lots of good advice from the other replies.
