House sparrow not so common.............
Breeding pairs of house sparrows are thought to have fallen by half since the 1970s, leading the BTO to appoint a new house sparrow officer, Rosie Clearly, to help monitor numbers. They were once a familiar sight in gardens, but in recent years the house sparrow has been a rarity. And bird experts fear the number of breeding pairs could have fallen by half since the 1970s, with the steepest decline in eastern England. With numbers spiralling to worrying depths, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) has placed the bird on its Red List.

Hedgehogs with taste for bird eggs face a cull..................
About 5,000 hedgehogs face being culled in April because they are eating too many eggs of ground-nesting birds. They are the offspring of four hedgehogs which were introduced to the Uists and Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides in 1974. Now they are being blamed for a rapid decline in the number of birds on the Scottish islands. North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have some of the highest recorded densities of birds in the world, but on South Uist and Benbecula surveys have shown that numbers of snipe, dunline, ringed plover, lapwing and redshank are down by around 60 per cent in 17 years.

Why haven't I got sparrows? In the twenty years I've lived here I've only ever seen one. There are many living and breeding just a mile away, but not here.
