Internal or external zoom

Can users who have experienced both please post the pros and cons of using both internal and external zooms. I am attracted to the internal zoom due to ease of use and the ability to get those quick record shots when needed, but worried they don't have the optical quality of the external zooms. Also are there adapters for internal zoom camera's for use after I have my record shot's and want something more composed and, for want of a better word, 'professional'? The camera would be used with a Kowa 883.
