Hi all
Would moving from a 10D to 30D gain me anything?

IMO - not a lot in terms of image quality.
The biggest gain is in speed of startup - the 10D takes several seconds to wake once it is sleeping; the 20D and later cameras wake almost instantly. Having lost a few shots b/c of that delay, I upgraded the 10D to the 20D and never regretted it. YMMV.
The 30D was the least compelling upgrade Canon has ever come up with. Were I you, I'd get the 20D or the 40D, but skip the 30D.

Another vote for the 40d if I were you.

The RAW buffer on the 20D is a bit prohibitive, so I would discount that if you shoot RAW.

You'll be able to get a good second hand 30D cheaper than a 40D though. I have had a 30D for a couple of years now and am impressed with it, its me who needs to practise more lol. As for an improvement to the 10D cant help there having never owned one.

For birding, you'll find the quick start-up and 5fps on the 30D very welcome. I started with a 10D, then a 5D which now gets most use, and added a 30D for birding. The 5fps did seem to help, but what helped most was getting Lehmann's to AF calibrate the body. It didn't cost too much, and certainly raised the keeper ratio.

Thanks for all the help I bought a 20d OFF EBAY,mint condition.Yes its got a smaller buffer but now I use a Sandisk 4gb extreme CF card it clears the buffer suprisingly quickly. The faster frame rate better handling at higher ISO`s & more focus points is what swayed me.Plus the 30D`s on ebay were going for stupid money & I couldn`t see much difference in spec next to the 20D.The only negative so far is the shutters Bl**dy noisy.

20D is a fine camera. Mine has served me very well; I'm sure you'll be happy.
