A few years back I sold my old Coolpix 4500 to help finance my first DSLR and 100-400 lens. Whilst I never go out birding without this combo there are certain situations where I wish I still had my digiscoping gear. The last one was at the Snowy Owl in Belgium. Great scope views, too far away for the 100-400 lens even with a converter. With the Coolpix I could have got good pics.
My question is if there is another small digital camera with non-extending lens and a thread for stepup/down rings (other than the 4500 or older Nikon models )? That's how I used to attach the coolpix to my scope.
any help would be much appreciated.

As far as I am aware the simple answer is no. I cannot recall any new cameras like that which would be suitable for digiscoping. You may if you particularly want that feature in a camera get a S/H 4500 or Contax.

Unfortunately no direct replacement for the 4500 but you'll find the newer Nikon Coolpixes suitable for digiscoping eg the P5100 . You can always screw a filter to the front of it's adapter and the lens would be internal.
