Hi

Am I right in thinking that on foot it is possible to enter the reserve by the route A5060 > Trans-Pennine trail (north of the canal/chemical works/Walton) and take the track in by the the eastern reedbeds?

Thanks

(Seems this is right: found the answer in a googled post on "wild about nature" forum)

Yeah you can, got in this way many times. It means you can check the gulls on Richmond Bank from the Gatewarth side first too. Then you can give the Mersey a good check - been Lesser Yellowlegs and Green Winged Teal been here. Cross the river over the single span bridge which the lorries use to get to the tip then after about 50 yards take a left down a footpath across a field to the reedbeds. The old canal path on the north side of the reedbed/willow carr is great, with big overhanging Hawthorns, good for Chiffys, and seen Firecrest here, with Willow Tits in the...willows. Carrying on this side gets you to Birchwood Pool with the screen/hide thing.
Alternatively you can skirt the reserve by hitting the road alongside the Ship Canal at the far east end then you'll get to the start/end of that long potholed track from where you can access the raised viewing platform thing.
Cheers.
