Not a photographer myself, and I guess it depends what birds you want, and when, but two hides that do get birds pretty close are at Bowling Green Marsh RSPB (ducks and waders) and Yarner Wood NNR (woodpeckers, tits, and flycatchers in spring, etc).

In the North of the county the only hide I know of is at Arlington Court - there is a well stocked feeding station that brings in all kinds of woodland birds including Marsh Tits. The hide is fairly new and not used a lot so pretty good for photography.

Any other good hides, around the torbay area would be good.

If you can time it right for a high tide, the beach behind Dawlish Warren's hide is great. Last year I was lying on it with flocks of dunlin and sanderling scurrying around, less than 6 feet in front of me.

Most of my photography from down there is from on-foot. When you're in such a lovely place such as Devon, why sit in a hide?! ;)
