Hi All.

I have just recently purchased a 2nd hand, Sigma 400mm F/5.6 to go with my D40 (and impending D90) and I have a couple of questions.

Can I use a tc with my current combo and if so which ones? I have looked though the forum and I am not sure which would be best, Nikon, Sigma, Kenko etc. As the lens is 5.6 I am not wanting to lose too many stops in our rather dull winter/spring light.

Also is it possible to have this lens (economically) serviced? Some of the screws are a tad loose, as is the focusing ring (or is it supposed to be like that).

I have added a couple of shots (manual focus) from a very overcast windy visit to RSPB Dungeness the other day, just for your comments.

I cant answer all your questions but I have a Sigma 5.6 400mm lens that I have had for 20+ years. Totally manual and an excellent lens. I havent yet tried it with my recently purchased D80 so cant comment on how it works. A few years ago I did get it serviced and it came back a very improved lens and much tighter feel to it. Cant recall who I used but I did a search on line and got a very reasonable quote.

I will assume that you would only want a 1.4x to only lose 1 stop, the Nikons won't work unless there modified, I would look for a used Sigma or Kenko if they are compatible but at 560mm you will need to mount it on a tripod as you will be shooting at f8.

I have Sigma 400/5,6 APO on my D70. I try to test TC kenko 1,5 (KENKO MC DG 1,5X) and AF was slow (but work) opticaly cannot say but I have only a while for the test. Picture was not so good as without TC but still good.

I have now no picture with this TC.

I had one of these once-purchased in 1993, and used it with a 2x Kenko. The af did work reliably but it was rather sluggish with my F601.
With hindsight should have kept it, it was a nice lens.

amazed that AF still worked at f8, wouldn't have thought enough light entered the camera
