Does anyone have any experience of this lens? There's a used one going and it might be the cheapest way back into 600 f4 territory. How do the optics stand up these days? Is the focus mechanism quick and smooth?
I'd be grateful for any comments. Cheers. :t:

I use a manual focus 500/4, and I'm very impressed with the lens, even with the 1.4B teleconverter. Have a look at my gallery on BF if you want to see some examples.

Thanks very much Helios. Some lovely shots there. So far, every reason to think that the old lens is every bit as capable as the AF-S, just without AF. Anyone else have any insight?

Excellent optic the question is can you handle the weight and manual focus. Forget bird in flight it is just impossible I am using my 300 plus 1.4 tc for that instead.
Yesterday images with nikon 600 AIS F4 mine is the later version with build front filter.

I use this lens for long range bird shots only , at the time when this lens was new ,it was the same price as a house in my area...so it must be good ! and it is , it focuses very quick and smoothly, the photos have excellent contrast and are sharp even with
a 2 converter ,this lens is a bitch to keep still ,but if you can then you will be rewarded...it is very heavy.
