Hi guys. I'm thinking of buying this TC but interested in anyone views who may have used one over the years. Anyone used a Nikon TC-16A - any thoughts?
Interested mainly in the IQ. It will be used manually.
Cheers

Hi Mat
I used a TC16AF for several years coupled to a Tokina 150-500 f5.6 ATX Zoom, worked very well with excellent sharpness and contrast. I've also used it with a Sigma 500 f4.5, didn't work very well, (but then neither did Sigma's own 1.4) I soon got rid of that lens, the Tokina was far better! I used it successfully with a Nikkor 300 f4 and a Nikkor 500 f4 P. I'ts not very fast at focussing, but provided you have prefocussed the lens at roughly the distance you think you will be working at, then it's pretty good and will lock on solid. I used it mainly on Nikon AF film cameras, but it works just as well with Nikon D70s, D200 and D300. I would say the glass and mechanics are as good as the TC14E and definately better than the independants offerings. If you get the oppotunity of one of these at a good price and you have a decent manual focus lens to go with it then go for it.

Hello Matt,
Ive been using this tc for a couple of years now, and find it to be a good performer {when attatched to the rear of a high quality prime}.
I find it to give slightly more punchy results than my old nikon tc14.
Ive used it as a manual tc, with my old D70/400mm f2.8, and as an AF tc with my D2h/400mm f2.8, and more recently with my D2h/400mm f3.5.
When using it as a manual tc, you need to ensure that the tc's lens elements are fully extended, to allow the prime lens to focus through its entire range {to infinity}.
These tc's can be found at bargain prices, due to its AF capability being restricted to very few digital cameras {D2h/D2x}, so its worth getting one, even if it is only to be used manually.
Apparently, this tc may vignette on a full frame body, but there is no sign of this problem on my dx body.

Mark, this is an old converter, and it will depend on which camera body is used, as to whether it will perform AF or not.
It wasn't fully compatable with my old D70, so it had to be used as a manual tc only.
It is fully compatable with my D2h, and therefore will allow AF with my MF lens's.
