In Capture NX, when I try to open an NEF file, I get an error message saying that the file cannot be loaded. What did I overlook or screw up on?

Maybe a dumb suggestion, but did you transfer the images from the camera to your hard drive first?

Then I'm inclined to think you're not doing wrong, but either your camera or Capture have issues (hopefully some settings issue).
Do the pictures show up on your lcd (of the camera). If so, can you convert to JPEG in camera? I'm not the most experienced person, but if those things work, I'm thinking Capture might have a problem.
Did you post this on nikonians? Not everyone here's a Nikon shooter. Good luck.

Does NX even support the D90? I use NX2 v.2.2.
Can you open the NEF in Windows? If not, you also need the latest Nikon NEF codec, v1.7 I think.
cheers,

Try Adobe DNG as NX may not be compatible. Neil.

Can't open in windows either. Where do I get that codec?
It's possible that NX may not support the D90 as it came with my D300.

I am pretty sure Capture NX support for the D90 begins with v2.1. Welcome to the wonderful world of RAW.

Gentoo: You need NX2 for the D90 not NX, sorry.

Ok, thanks. Kind of figured that. I guess I won't be using the D90 for too many bird shots. A few but not many.
