I happened to be reading some old post on the Pentax 8x33 XP , about their quality verses the Sp model & others. I own a pair . Like them alot, cant beat the price. Compact , decent eye relief, view is not as good as my Sp but overall a good compact binocular. One can debate one quality of one binocular over another til the cows come & we all will have are own views. ****That being said one thing that Iam sure of is these are waterproof as advertised !!! **** I fell into a cold river last weekend my 8x33 xp in one hand & they ended up in about 5 feet of cold water for about 5min. before I was able to retreive them . You would never know they were at the bottom of the creek, took them home cleaned them up no water damage , Thanks PENTAX.

I think the Pentax roofs at least since the WP range have all been JIS6 waterproof and fogproof EXCEPT the 8x36 HS which is only JIS4 (water/weather resistant) and probaly wouldn't survive that immersion without some water getting in. They jsut replaced the HS with the similar but JIS6 waterproof NV.

Not sure about earlier Pentax roofs (HR, HRc and the like).

I guess that old saying : You get what you pay for ,especially when it comes to optics saved me this time. I paid $ 274 worth every penny.

That is good to know. I did a similar test, accidentally ofcourse, with the 8x32 SPs when I first owned them. They survived 4 feet of pool water for the few minutes it took to get changed and jump in.
