I have a Nikon D80 with Sigma 150-500 and Sigma 1.4 T.C ( Cellotaped for auto focus ) - Still getting used to this set up.

Generally I shoot in P mode.

Can anyone give definitive advise for best set up with the D80 ??

Also, what is an amp ?, I presume its a extension tube for increased mag which is attractive as I have been warned off moving up to a 1.7 T.C.

Any advice grteatfully appreciated from the wise !.

Not sure if P-mode is the way to go, or if there is such a thing as defintive advise.
I use A-mode most of the time, sometimes M (never used P for anything) and work with ISO settings (trying to avoid >400). If possible I try to use the smallest possible aperture that allows sufficient shutter speed, most of the time aiming for f8. AF mode depends on subject, if the bird is stationary or moves slow and predictable S works better for me than C.

Generally I shoot in P mode.

Hi, there are no definitive settings on any camera, there are a few that may be relatively stable but generally until you get to where your shooting, you may not be able to set white balance, ISO (which will effects shutter speed and aperture available)
Suggest you get a book such as the RSPB guide to digital photography and go from there.
If I were unsure of which setting to use I would shoot in aperture priority, no higher than 400iso on the D80 and if its not a bright day have the lens wide open, if the suns out try stopping down up to f8. With a 150-500 forget the 1.4x and use at the very least a monopod or in a hide a beanbag.
sorry if it sounds a little unhelpful but as you will see from other threads there are no golden settings.

Seaspirits earlier response was sound advise

I see no one has answered the question 'what is a 2 x Amp'. I have also seen this reference to a Amp and often wondered what the heck it was.

I should imagine it's a 2x TC (amplifier).

The only 2X Amp i know of is a Barlow eyepiece when using an astronomical telescope.

Probably is John-henry but I have never heard of a Tele converter or Extender being referred to as a Amplifier.

Nor have I Roy, but I'm thinking it might be one of those words from across the pond.
